The Borgias

Jeremy Irons

Last night, I caught the first episode of “The Borgias” on Showtime. Silly me. Here I was expecting a serious exploration of politics and the papacy in 16th century Rome, and instead I get “The Sopranos” in tights. Or perhaps more accurately, a retread of Showtime’s series about Henry VIII, only set in Italy, or HBO’s “Rome” set 600 years later.

Perhaps I’ve reached the age where few things seem new to me, but I didn’t make it to the end of episode. I can always watch the rest later, but I’m not feeling it. Especially after they killed off Derek Jacobi in the first hour.
