I long for the day that land becomes so valuable for farming that it becomes prohibitively expensive to convert it into single-acre McMansion housing developments. Farmland, even productive farmland, has become too cheap.

This would keep people closer to urban cores (not necessarily within  cities themselves) which by itself would drive down energy consumption. Perhaps this would  mean finally finding an equilibrium that maintains if not enhances our standard of living while preserving both our established infrastructure AND environment.
